In today’s fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the grind of work, personal responsibilities and the endless list of to-dos. Yet, Shayok Dutta, Senior Business Analyst on the pharmacy team at Blue Shield of California, remains committed to volunteering. Despite working at Blue Shield for only four years, Shayok has already volunteered over 290 hours—an impressive number that speaks volumes about his dedication to giving back.

A lifelong commitment to volunteering
For Shayok, volunteering isn’t just something he does when he has free time; it’s been a part of his lifestyle since he was in grade school. Now, Shayok dedicates his time to a variety of causes, including nonprofit children’s hospitals, healthcare organizations and local government initiatives, to name a few. Whether it's volunteering for beach cleanups with the Corporate Citizenship team or organizing employee resource group events with the Asian Pacific Alliance and Operation VET, Shayok is always there.

He credits his ability to balance work and volunteering in part to the 24 hours of community service time Blue Shield provides employees. "Volunteering makes me feel good, and honestly, you never know who you will meet and what you will learn," he says.

Volunteering and building connections
One of the most remarkable things about volunteering is the relationships it fosters. Shayok has volunteered alongside incredible leaders like Hope Scott, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary and Dr. Ravi Kavasery, Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, each of whom has left a lasting impression on him. "Seeing all these leaders volunteering because they want to give back, despite their hectic schedules, made me realize that if they can find time, we all can," Shayok shares.

During his first volunteering experience with Blue Shield, he met  Hope Scott, who later supported his master’s capstone project and helped connect him with key advisors on the legal team.

Volunteering as a Lifestyle
Shayok’s commitment to giving back doesn’t stop at corporate events. When tragedy struck Maui with devastating fires, he flew out to help, sorting and distributing food to both the fire crews and survivors. He also helped with the recovery efforts after the Palisades fires in Southern California, proving that when there is a need, he finds a way to help.

A call to action: Volunteering made easy
Shayok’s message to anyone who wants to give back is simple: "Find something you are passionate about and give back to your community, whether it’s through local schools, food banks, churches or animal shelters. Even if it’s just one hour a month, you’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll feel both physically and mentally."

Shayok Dutta’s journey of giving back is a reminder that volunteering isn’t just about community service—it’s about connection, growth and fulfillment. In a world where many are focused on individual success, Shayok’s story reminds us that sometimes the greatest reward comes from helping others.
